Development (Phase of Design)

From The Learning Engineer's Knowledgebase

The development phase is the third step of the ADDIE model for design. It is in this phase that the actual components, features, interfaces, media, and technologies are actually built. Following the ADDIE model in order is not required, but it typically is helpful to have a design plan in place for the stylistic decisions and specifications for the design from previous steps before development begins. Otherwise, the development is unguided and may not adequately the goals and learning objectives of the product.

Primary tasks and procedures of the development phase

The main tasks of the development phase is to actually build the features of the product under design. This involves creating all of the necessary deliverables or work products that will be used when the product is deployed.

Primary tasks of the development phase:

  • Communicating design specifications to developers and artists
  • Setting development schedules and deadlines
  • Producing informational sources:
    • Producing texts and hypertexts
    • Producing video, lectures,
    • Producing audio, podcasts, and sounds
    • Producing interactive learning objects
    • Producing websites
    • Producing animations
    • Producing graphics and digital art
    • Producing print and layout documents
  • Developing the activities and interactions of the course
    • Developing instructions and student materials for activities
    • Documenting expectations for participants
    • Developing instructions and materials for teacher or facilitator implementation
    • Developing grading policies and rubrics for evaluation
    • Developing scaffolds and support materials
    • Developing special tutorial and onboarding materials and exercises for getting familiarized with the product
  • Developing interfaces and navigation
  • Developing "wrap around" content and packaging to distribute the product
  • Developing descriptions of the product for promotion and sharing, and marketing if commercially available
  • Developing and customizing the technologies to be used
  • Producing online course materials and using a learning management system (LMS)
  • Conducting alpha and beta testing
  • Conducting usability and feasibility evaluation at the development phase
  • Revising previous specifications based on development constraints
