Social media and social networks

From The Learning Engineer's Knowledgebase

Social media and social networks are digital communications media and technologies that allow people to communicate with each other, share information, and connect virtually.

Social media have become popular since 2010, especially as mobile devices have become common that give people an increased the opportunity to share and see other people's information from their pocket device.

Social media are also highly multimedia in scope, with an emphasis placed on images, video, and text content alike. Many social media apps specialize in a specific kind of media, such as photos (e.g., Instagram, Pinterest) or video (e.g., YouTube, Tiktok). Other social media allow you to share and organize general types of content for people to follow (e.g., Facebook, Twitter).

Although the sharing of information is certainly not a new concept, social media technologies emphasize making connections by following other users' accounts, which integrates that user's content into a person's content feeds that they see every time that they open the software.

Instructional designers today should be well aware of social media and its use by their audiences, as it could be possibly used in ways that align with how audiences interact and take advantage of the software and apps that they are already using every day.
