Nonprofit, government, and advocacy education

From The Learning Engineer's Knowledgebase

In the nonprofit, government, and advocacy education domain, organizations seek to use instructional design to raise awareness, get people to take action, and otherwise teach the public about important issues and areas of concern. The types of learning that these groups do must often be very fast

Examples of nonprofit, government, and advocacy:

  • Advertisements, texts/literature, and awareness campaigns from organizations
  • Nonprofit organization casual learning opportunities for the public (e.g., courses, educational programs)
  • Trade association trainings, courses, and educational programs
  • Research and educational organization information sharing, dissemination, or promotion of findings from studies
  • Professional licensure and regulatory organizations: courses, continuing education
  • Advocacy and action on important issues with the public, communities, and governments
  • Charity awareness and action initiatives (e.g., educating on important issues, fundraising)
  • Government initiatives, programs, and public education efforts
  • Political campaigns

It is important to consider the unique contexts related to the issues that these groups are trying to raise awareness and action on when thinking about how educational products are used in this domain. Each organization or group will have different instructional goals for the public, and the audiences will also likely differ. Additionally, the time availability of the public will often be incredibly short - awareness and educational efforts in this domain are often just as much about getting and keeping people's attention for just a few moments as it is the educational content!
