Goals of design

From The Learning Engineer's Knowledgebase

The fundamental goal of instructional design is for the designer to create an experience or environment in which learners can achieve learning objectives. Although some goals differ among instructional design projects and the design features of products vary widely, most designers build educational products with these fundamental goals in mind.

Definition

There is a fundamental goal of design that is agreed upon by any person who engages in instructional design: Designers should create learning experiences and learning environments that are intended for participants to achieve specific educational objectives.

Additional Information

Instructional designers' primary goal is to first and foremost design things that help people learn. As such, this goal drives much of the work process to build an educational product (such as the ADDIE model).

Additional goals of design may also exist, such as to create evidence for how and why educational products work in different contexts (e.g., to conduct educational evaluation and research) and whether new design ideas and emerging technologies can be used for educational purposes. However, all educational designs are typically driven by the fundamental goal of designing things that intentionally help people learn.

Instructional design is first an intentional field of work, in that everything that instructional designers build is for a purpose. Second, it is an experimental field of work, in that instructional designers often try new things and see how innovations, ideas, and emerging methods can be used for learning purposes. Both approaches, however, are both aimed toward helping learners achieve their desired objectives.

Tips and Tricks

  • When working on an educational design project, always keep in mind the primary goal of building things that help people learn. This goal will help guide your work and keep you focused, as many aspects of design can be distracting and can draw you away from your primary goal of helping people learn.
