Programming tasks can be used as projects for participants in any field, not just those learning programming or computer science. As software is just a programmed set of instructions to a computer to do things, learning to program is to tell a computer what functions that you want it to perform. Building apps or pieces of software can be useful in project-based learning or problem-based learning in which a design challenge or scenario is provided to learners and they need to build a solution to the problem.

Programming is also considered an emerging literacy skill that is useful for any career. As such, projects that encourage learners to give instructions to computers for them to perform tasks can have added benefit on top of any content-based learning objectives.
